Importing Mediterranean foods into Canada through the Port of Vancouver

Containers from Spain, Italy, Greece and Tunisia land at the Port of Vancouver, clear customs there, and move east by rail intermodal and truck. Most buyers never touch a customs form: they buy delivered from our stock. Buyers who want a container direct to their own dock get the documents their broker needs, in the order the broker needs them.

Two ways to buy

Delivered from Vancouver stock
Harbourline is the importer of record. The goods are already cleared and duty paid when you order. You receive a domestic invoice in Canadian dollars with GST, and a pallet at your dock. No customs work on your side. This is how restaurants, most grocers and smaller distributors buy.
Container direct to your dock
You, through your customs broker, are the importer of record. We book the producer, the freight and the documents; your broker files the entry at Vancouver and the container is railed or trucked to your DC still sealed. Chains and distributors taking ten pallets or more of one line buy this way. The import guide covers the licence and document detail.

The customs steps, in general terms

This is the sequence for a container-direct order. For stock orders we run the same steps on our own account. It is an outline, not legal advice; your broker and the responsible agency confirm the specifics for your business.

  1. Set up to import

Your business needs an import-export account on its business number and a licensed customs broker. Most businesses that import food into Canada also need a Safe Food for Canadians licence from the CFIA. Your broker or the CFIA confirms which licence your operation needs. We do not hold registrations on a buyer's behalf.

  2. Pre-shipment review

We send your broker the pro-forma invoice, the specification sheets and the label artwork. The broker confirms tariff classification, checks the CFIA import conditions for each product, and flags anything that needs a change before the goods are packed.

  3. Shipment documents

With the container booked, we issue the commercial invoice and packing list, the carrier issues the bill of lading, the producer's laboratory issues the certificate of analysis, and the exporter adds the origin declaration where a trade agreement calls for one.

  4. Arrival and release

Your broker files the entry electronically ahead of arrival. The CBSA releases the container; the CFIA may inspect or sample. Duties, if any, and GST are assessed on the entry and paid through the broker.

  5. Devanning and delivery

The container is drayed to the warehouse or your DC, devanned, and the pallets move onto the lane: truck for Calgary, rail intermodal for Toronto and Montreal.
